The Romanian people, bearing the Rome's seal, has appeared in the history in the first millenium of the Christian era and has lived on in the same geographic area until today. The Romanian people's birth can be considered finished during the VIIth century, after the assimilation of the Slave's groups staying here in their road to South of Danube. The pre-state entities of the Romanian populations (principalities = cnezate and voievodate) was attested by various Byzantine, Slave, Hungarian sources and subsequently by the western ones, since the Xth century. During the XIVth century, by the fusion of the existing pre-state entities, have appeared the first medieval Romanian states. These were governed by a single voivode - a similar process both in Tara Romaneasca (under Basarab I, about 1360 year) and in Moldavia (under Bogdan I, about 1359 year). The Romanian's States constitution was favoured by the development of the commercial roads and by the weakness of Hungary following the Mongol invasion. Since the Middle Age, the Romanian's have lived on in three neighbouring principalities with autonomous status: Tara Romaneasca (Walachia) , Moldavia and Transylvania. Tara Romaneasca and Moldavia, despite the great conquering campaigns of the Habsburg Empire, have succeeded to maintain their independence for one century (XIVth - XVth century). In the same time, these two principalities were menaced by the powerful Ottoman Empire ascension, which, after conquering the Balkan peninsula, has directed its attention to the Western Europe. |
